When Lauren Wasser, a model from California, got menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS) from wearing tampons, her life altered forever. At 24, the infection put her in a coma and caused her right leg to be cut off. Seven years later, she had to have another amputation, this time losing her left leg.

mTSS is an uncommon disorder that can be life-threatening and is caused by toxins from bacteria. Lauren had a very bad time. She had a 42-degree Celsius temperature, her kidneys and organs weren’t working right, and she had two heart attacks. There was only a 1% chance that she would live.
